Global IP Filing Reached New Heights, Asia Drives Growth

Fresh from the oven statistics by World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO, global IP reached new heights recently. The article/report with the reference publication PR/2022/897 dated Nov 21, 2022 shared interesting global statistics on IP filing trends in 2021. But why did Global IP reached new heights?

Total Application in 2021

  • Patent = 3.4 million applications (+3.6%)
  • Trademark = 18.1 million trademark class (+5.5%)
  • Industrial design = 1.5 million application (+9.2%)
  • Plant Variety = 25,000 applications (+12%)

Malaysia received a total of 7,534 patent filing last year whereby 883 applications are filed by residents and the remaining filing of 6,651 are non-residents. Also, a total of 1,739 applications for industrial design were filed, where 468 are residents but 1,271 are non-residents filing. No detailed data for Malaysia Trade Mark filing.

Some other interesting statistic are women inventors in Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications rose from 10.6% in 2007 to 16.5% in 2021 and the field of technology that has the higher shares of PCT applications with women inventors in 2021 is related to life sciences.

The 185-page report consists of detailed IP filing trends and statistics on pending IPs, granted IPs, IPs in-force, top receiving IP offices, top patent technology fields, patent prosecution highway (PPH), top trademark applications by Nice/industry sector, applications by residents or non-residents, approval and rejection statistics and etc.
